The potion of life is a low-level potion that restores 5 to 20 hit points upon consumption and has a drinking skill requirement of level 4. It has the lowest drinking level requirement of any potion besides the potion of poison, which is not drunk. Potions of life are useful for healing until a player reaches around life level 20. They may still be carried if a player's drinking skill is not high enough to drink potions of extra life, such as when one is polymorphed into a minotaur.
